Implementation Day 21 – Mail Merge and AdWords

Implementation Day 21 – Mail Merge and AdWords

This blog is a worts’n’all picture of trying to put in place these business ideas, and it’s not all rosy. It’s not the best time for me to be undertaking this implementation project. There’s a whole lot going on outside of the business that’s making it very difficult for me to keep focus on it. I guess at the same time that’s exactly the reason to keep going with it! If it wasn’t for the goals I’d set for myself I wouldn’t be doing any of this stuff at the moment. Baby steps are better than no steps at all. Progress is sometimes frustratingly slow though.

I didn’t have time to work on the biggie’s that I wanted to do today, but did manage to send out an email to about 400 of the people in my database. This was to tell them about the new video on the Christmas Party Magician website. It’ll be the last email of this type. The next emails I send out, after Christmas, will be to tell the world about my new magic project and will be an actual ‘newsletter’ (probably using MailChimp), set up with segmented, contacts via a fully functioning CRM system (SugarCRM)! It has made sense for me to push the Christmas gigs ahead of doing any more on the CRM, but now it’s time for AdWords to run their course. Other direct marketing efforts for Christmas have just about finished.

In amongst other distractions, I also got a fair bit of admin done. However, if you could see the explosion of paper on my desk, you would rightly assume that the ‘to do’ list is much bigger than the ‘done’ list. Isn’t that always the way though.

Cait also had another blast on AdWords tweaking today. The changes that she has made to that over the past couple of weeks and the new video have had a significant impact on the success of the whole “Christmas Party Magician” promotion. Time and money well spent for bringing in those extra gigs. AdWords is much like an onion skin. Just when you think you’ve got a grasp of it, you realise a whole new skin of subtle complexity behind it. A fresh pair of eyes has been incredibly useful to take it to the next step.

That’s about it for today. Hopefully, I can “Eat a Frog” (see book reference from a few days back) tomorrow and update on that then.

Just sat and read every post Damian. Some fantastic work here and very inspiring to read and recognise some of the same challenges I face having just Linda and myself doing every aspect of running the business. I don’t know too many magicians but I would have a serious wager that your attitude, application, determination and thinking really will take you to a whole new level as even some higher profile magicians won’t be doing some of this stuff… Great work my friend, keep it up.

PS. I’ll be reading every day now 🙂

    • Wow, thanks for that Paul. Just the boost I needed. I read your comment before going to bed last night which brought a smile to my face after feeling less than impressed with myself.
I’ve started today by attacking my CRM data. I will tame the beast!
      Thanks again for the encouragement!

  2. Damian you are already doing far more than most business people do, let alone most magicians. Keep it up mate, positive focus. I love reading your posts and it helps keep me positive and focused.
Sorry I’ve missed you the last few times you’ve been up in Sheffield, I must try harder next time.

    • Thanks for that Allan. It’s good to know you’re reading. Much appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you soon in the promised land of Sheffield. And thanks again for the supportive comments!
